Exciting New Finishes for Wine Country Furniture by 2 Day Designs

When it comes time for harvesting, wine grapes selected for ripeness are still picked by hand. Nowadays, the grapes are loaded into plastic cartons and the cartons go on trailers pulled by tractors. In olden times in Europe, the picked grapes went into vineyard carts. Those wooden carts were loaded onto narrow wagons pulled by horses.

Beautiful wine furniture, made by 2-Day Designs, captures the look and feel of those vintage vineyard carts. This wine country furniture now has two exciting new finishes, vineyard and caramel, as well as the old favorite pine as optional choices for the different furniture pieces in this extraordinary collection.

Guide to Selecting 2 Day Designs Best Selling Finishes

Vineyard Finish on Oak Wood

The vineyard finish is unique compared to the other 2 Day Designs finishes.  It reacts with the chemical composition of the wood. On pine we get an almost cedar or heart pine look. On oak, in most cases, the vineyard finish turns black. Look at the oak stave legs on the round table in the photo above compared to the table top in this same photo which is made of pine. The entire table, legs and top, are all stained with Vineyard!  You’ll notice the same wood type finish differences for the stave leg lazy susan that’s on the top of this table as well.

History of the Wooden Lazy Susan

Lazy Susans make it easy to share food amongst diners. There is none of that bothersome passing of dishes back and forth between the guests. Just spin the wooden Lazy Susan to have a serving from the dish of your choice.  Useful and decorative in nature with custom designs that allow for personalization.

History of the Wooden Lazy Susan

barrel_lazy_susans

No one knows if there ever was any particular woman named Susan or if she was lazy. The name is descriptive of convenience. The use of the Lazy Susan in America became popular around 1900 as a way to serve food more easily without needing so many servants. The idea was that food served using a Lazy Susan was a more communal experience.

Another benefit of using a Lazy Susan was that without a servant nearby, no one except the diners heard the conversations. This allowed completely private discussions while dining together. The ever-practical Henry Ford used a large Lazy Susan when he went camping during the 1920s. In this way, he could bring plenty of guests and take along fewer servants.

Wine Barrel Style with Stave Stools

Wine barrel furniture comes in two types, furniture made from reclaimed wood from wine barrels, and furniture designed like wine barrels in term of shapes and colors.  Decorating with a wine barrel theme is a timeless decor dating back into the ages.

Recycled Wine Barrels into Wine Tables & Stave Stools

Making furniture from wine barrels is a great way to recycle them, after they are no longer useful for storing wine for aging. Wine barrels come from cooperages, which are special firms with talented artisans who have skills making oak barrels. The oak used comes from dedicated forests in either the Midwest or France.

It takes up to 100 years for an oak tree to grow large enough for use in making wine barrels. Most of the wood used for making wine barrels is over two hundred years old. Only a small portion of the wood from the oak tree makes good wine barrels, because the wood must be free of knots and any imperfections, in order to make strong, watertight barrels.

Wine Barrel Furniture: Functional Artwork

If you’ve ever visited a winery, chances are you saw rows of stacked oak barrels, each filled with fifty or so gallons of some unknown nectar being aged until just the right moment. Using an ages-old design, each of those barrels was constructed by artisans known as coopers. Though they come in several sizes, each barrel is made up of pieces of wood known as staves. These staves, which have been shaped into a bulging cylinder, are held in place by metal hoops. A flat, circular piece of wood caps each end.

By the way, here’s an interesting fact for you. Ever wonder why a barrel bulges in the middle? Its shape is designed so the barrel can easily be rolled when on its side. The curved design allows the barrel to be spun easily to control direction.wine-gifts-wine-barrel-bistro-table--2-day-designs-sku3366-315

Though barrel building is an ancient art, an actual wine barrel has a relatively short lifespan. As a barrel is used, the main benefit–the oak flavor it imparts–decreases to the point where it is non-existent. (Think of a piece of chewing gum.) When that happens, the barrel essentially becomes a neutral storage vessel. The wine might as well be stored in flavor-free stainless steel, which lasts longer and costs less.

After being used for a few years (the number varies but the average is around five) barrels are disposed of by wineries. Unfortunately, many end up cut in half to serve as planters. Imagine a barrel that once stored a glorious cabernet now serving as home to a bunch of geraniums! That’s better than the barrel being merely thrown away but there is a better option: made to order wine barrel furniture.

Wine Bottle Lighting: Illuminating with Recycled Glass

From clear to blue to amber to various shades of greens, glass wine bottles have always had beauty in their own right. Still, most us of see them only as empty containers and they usually end up in the recycling bin.

Turn a Bottle Into a Light

Long ago, somebody had the idea to stick a candle in top of an empty wine bottle. Now, that simple concept has been taken to a new level and an entire industry has been created to re-purpose bottles. Craftsmen have taken bottles that were once trash, re-envisioned a new use, and created incredibly elaborate and beautiful works of art.
